Ólafsfjörður [ ˈouːlafsˌfjœrðʏr ] is a trading town in the municipality of Fjallabyggð in the Norðurland eystra region . On January 1, 2019, it had 787 inhabitants.
geography
Ólafsfjörður is located in northern Iceland on the Tröllaskagi peninsula on the fjord of the same name , a western branch of the Eyjafjörður . To the south of the city is the lake Ólafsfjarðarvatn, which is connected to the fjord via Ólafsfjarðará.
history
Ólafsfjörður has been an important fishing village since the end of the 19th century due to the fishing grounds in front of the place. In 2006 a merger of the previously independent municipality Ólafsfjörður (isl. Ólafsfjarðarbær ) with Siglufjörður was decided. The municipality was named Fjallabyggð.

You can ski in the mountains around the village between October and April.
traffic
Since 1991 the Ólafsfjarðarvegur has been running south through the 3.4 km long Múlagöng tunnel into Eyjafjörður . From 2006 to 2010 the Héðinsfjarðargöng tunnel was built between Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður . The Siglufjarðarvegur runs through it . The distance to Reykjavík is 414 kilometers by road through the Héðinsfjarðargöng.
