The Ólafsfjarðarvegur is a main road in the north-east of Iceland .

It branches off the ring road to the north about 10 km north of Akureyri . The Hörgá flows through its valley and is a well-known salmon river. In Möðruvellir there was an Augustinian monastery in the Middle Ages and is the birthplace of some well-known Icelanders. From Árskógssandur there is a ferry connection to the island of Hrísey . In Dalvík, the Ólafsfjarðarvegur becomes the Skíð, Hafnar and Gunnar bride one after the other. The Sæfari ferry docks in the harbor. With it you can reach the islands of Grímsey and Hrísey. Since the end of 1990, one has reached Ólafsfjörður through Múlagöng . Before that, since 1966, you had to go around Ólafsfjarðarmúli on the unsafe Múlavegur, which reached a height of up to 200 m. In Ólafsfjörður the Ólafsfjarðarvegur is first called Múlavegur and then Aðalgata. The Aðalgata merges into the Siglufjarðarvegur , which leads through the Héðinsfjarðargöng . S76

To the south, the Ægisgata branches off, as Ólafsfjarðarvegur is called here. At the end of the lake Ólafsfjarðarvatn it is only a side road that is no longer asphalted from here. Behind the bridge over the Ólafsfjarðará, the Þóroddsstaðavegur 8016 branches off . It runs on the other side of the river. This section over the Lágheiði rises to a height of 409 m and was the road connection to Siglufjörður before the tunnel was opened in 2010. Around the Drykkjarárfoss waterfall, Ólafsfjarðarvegur changes its direction to the northwest. The Sléttuvegur T789leads to the hydroelectric power station, which was built in 1945 to supply Siglufjörður with electricity and is fed by the Stífluvatn. The Siglufjarðarvegur joins from the west S76and gives its name to the further course to the place.

The connection between Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður is only 17 km long through the Héðinsfjarðargöng. Before that, you had to cover a distance of almost 80 km over the Lágheiði and if this was not passable in winter, about 230 km over the ring road were necessary. An average of 720 vehicles pass through the tunnel every day.
