The Múlagöng are a road tunnel in the northeast of Iceland . The tunnel is also called Ólafsfjarðargöng .
The Ólafsfjarðarvegur between Akureyri , Dalvík and Ólafsfjörður runs through this single-lane, poorly lit tunnel . The Múlagöng are 3400 meters long, opened in December 1990 and inaugurated on March 1, 1991. The tunnel passes under the 400 meter high Ólafsfjarðar múli , which separates the two fjords Ólafsfjörður and Eyjafjörður . This is where the name Múlagöng comes from . Before the tunnel was opened, the Múlavegur had led around Ólafsfjarðarmúli at a height of up to 200 since 1966. This road connection shortened the driving distance from Ólafsfjörður to Akureyri by 149 km. Previously, Ólafsfjörður was only accessible from the west via Siglufjarðarvegur .
