The Siglufjarðarvegur is a main road in the north-west of Iceland . It leads around the west coast of the Tröllaskagi peninsula .

About 750 m east of the Héraðsvötn , the Siglufjarðarvegur branches off to the north from the ring road . The Sauðárkróksbraut S75from Sauðárkrókur flows in from the west . To the east, the Hólavegur branches off S767to the historical place Hólar , which is now known for its horse breeding school. North of the mouth of the Kolka, the road runs along the east coast of Skagafjörður . The village of Hofsós used to be an important trading post. There is now a West Driver Museum here, among other things. These were the Icelanders who emigrated to America and Canada in the 19th century . The Höfðavatn is a lagoon that has formed east of the rock Þórðarhöfði. In the north, the Haganessandur divides the Haganesvík Bay from the Hópsvatn lagoon . The Ólafsfjarðarvegur flows in from the south and ends S82here.

The Miklavatn is an elongated lagoon that is largely separated from the Fljótavík bay by the Stakkagarðhólmi headland . The Skarðsvegur L793was the road connection to Siglufjörður between 1946 and 1967 and climbed winding up to a height of 630 m. Since then, the road has continued north and leads through the single-lane Strákagöng tunnel (830 m long). In Siglufjörður the Siglufjarðarvegur is first called Hanneyrarbraut, then turns into Hlíðarvegur, which first becomes Túngata and later becomes Snorragata. Behind the village, Skarðsvegur branches off again T793to the south, which initially leads to the local ski area. A short spur road leads north to Siglufjörður Airport , which is on the inside on the east bank of the fjord. Then the road runs for 3.9 km in Héðinsfjarðargöng vestari . The road only crosses the valley behind Héðinsfjörður for about 600 m , and then runs for 6.9 km in Héðinsfjarðargöng eystri . 600 behind the tunnel, Siglufjarðarvegur ends at Ólafsfjarðarvegur S82 .

The connection between Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður is only 17 km long through the Héðinsfjarðargöng. Before that, you had to cover a distance of almost 80 km over the Lágheiði and if this was not passable in winter, around 230 km over the ring road were necessary. An average of 720 vehicles pass through the tunnel every day.
