geography

Siglufjörður is located on the Tröllaskagi peninsula in northern Iceland .

history

During the herring boom , Siglufjörður had over 3,000 inhabitants. The herring fishing museum and a herring festival testify to the heyday. In June 2006, the municipality Siglufjörður (isl. Siglufjarðarkaupstaður ) with Ólafsfjörður (isl. Ólafsfjarðarbær ) merged and the municipality Fjallabyggð was formed. With the formation of Fjallabyggð Siglufjörður moved from the region Norðurland vestra to the region Norðurland eystra .

Culture

In July the folk music festival with Icelandic and international music takes place in Siglufjörður  . This goes back to the initiative of the politically influential priest and composer Bjarni Þorsteinsson (1861–1938), who is considered the “keeper of Icelandic folk music” in Iceland. A museum was dedicated to him in the oldest house in town from 1884, in which Bjarni lived and worked for ten years from 1888. For almost 25 years of his life he collected traditional and almost forgotten songs from Iceland, which he published again between 1906 and 1909, and which have thus been preserved for posterity. In the museum, life but also his work is presented, and traditional instruments and songs can be viewed or heard at the same time.

Siglufjörður was the main filming location of the TV series Trapped - Gefangen in Iceland in 2015 , which, however, took place in Seyðisfjörður , whereby many outdoor shots were also made in Seyðisfjörður.

traffic

The place is on Siglufjarðarvegur S76 . Until the construction of the first longer tunnel in Iceland - the Strákagöng - the place was difficult to reach by land. From 2006 to 2010 the Héðinsfjarðargöng tunnel was built between Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður . The distance to Reykjavík is 386 kilometers by road.
