The Siglufjörður is a fjord in the northeast of Iceland .
This fjord is located west of Ólafsfjörður and Héðinsfjörður in the north of the Tröllaskagi peninsula . It is about 3.5 km wide and 6.5 km into the country. The Siglufjarðarvegur runs along the west bank and reaches the fjord through the 830 m long Strákagöng tunnel . Behind Siglufjörður , the road leads east through the western part of Héðinsfjarðargöng . The place has 1184 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and was one of the largest cities in the country during the herring boom in the 1950s. The Fjarðará flows into the fjord. Here the Skarðsvegur leads first to the local ski area and then to the 630 m high Siglufjarðarskarð. Before the Strákagöng was opened, the path was the only road connection into the fjord. It is winding, not safe for winter and now only passable in summer. The local airport is located inside on the east bank .
