Hólar ( Hólar í Hjaltadal , [ ˈhouːlar i ˈçal̥taˌtaˑl ]) is a small town with 93 inhabitants (January 1, 2019) in northern Iceland in the Norðurland vestra region .

For centuries (from 1106 to 1801) it was the second bishopric founded by Jón Ögmundsson next to Skálholt and an important place in Iceland. Today there is a college for horse and fish breeding as well as for tourism.

The parish of Hólar with the cathedral church in the municipality of Skagafjörður has been Protestant since the Reformation . The title of an Evangelical Lutheran titular bishopric and a Catholic titular bishopric refers to Hólar .

history

The Catholic diocese of Hólar was founded in 1106 and included northern Iceland, its first bishop was Jón Ögmundsson (Ögmundsson), and it lasted until 1550, d. H. until the Reformation . The last Catholic bishop Jón Arason achieved fame, who vigorously opposed the Reformation and was captured by people of the Danish king after lengthy, sometimes military conflicts and executed in Skálholt in 1550 .

After an interval of two years it became Evangelical Lutheran in 1552, its last Evangelical bishop was Sigurður Stefánsson from 1789 to 1798 . The evangelical diocese was then merged with that of Skálholt to form an evangelical all-Icelandic diocese, the former diocese of the south in Skálholt had been administered from Reykjavík since 1784 because of the greater risk of earthquakes in Skálholt .

In 1923 a new Catholic diocese was established in Reykjavík.
