Map of Iceland

The list of cities in Iceland provides an overview of the development of the population of the larger urban settlements in Iceland . An alphabetical list of all inhabited urban settlements in the country is also provided.

According to the number of inhabitants

By far the largest agglomeration in Iceland is Reykjavík ( Höfuðborgarsvæðið ) with a population of 191,612 (as of December 1, 2006). This means that over 60 percent of the country's population is concentrated in the capital region.

The following table shows the urban settlements with more than 1,000 inhabitants (not to be confused with the Icelandic municipalities ). These are the results of the population census (VZ) of December 1, 1980 and the official estimates of the State Office for Statistics of December 31, 2000, December 1, 2007 and January 1, 2010. The region to which the Settlement belongs. The population figures refer to the respective urban or local settlement in the narrower sense, not to the city or municipality in the political sense.
