Bifröst [ ˈpɪvrœst ] is a place in the municipality of Borgarbyggð in the Vesturland region in western Iceland . On January 1, 2019, the place had 164 inhabitants.
geography
Bifröst lies east of Hreðavatn , about 45 km north of Borgarnes on Hringvegur below the Grábrók crater and the Baula volcano . Beyond the Grábrókarhraun lava field is the salmon river Norðurá .
University of Bifröst
The center of the town of Bifröst is the private business school Háskólinn á Bifröst (member of the University of the Arctic ), to which a boarding school with various facilities is attached. The place has formed around the university. He has a supermarket and a hotel.
history
The campus of the school founded in 1918, from which the University of Bifröst emerged, was built in Bifröst in 1955. In 1988 the school was granted university status. With the construction of the Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel , the accessibility of the place improved, which caused growth.
