Svalbarðseyri is the main town in the municipality of Svalbarðsströnd in northern Iceland. On January 1, 2019, the place had 361 inhabitants.

geography

The place is located on the east bank of Eyjafjörður north of the city of Akureyri . To the east of the village is the Vaðlaheiði and the wooded Fnjóskadalur . North of Svalbarðseyri is the Víkurskarð pass road . At Svalbarðseyri the river Ljótsstaðaá flows into the Eyjafjörður.

history

Svalbarðseyri is a former trading place: Iceland's first and oldest Kaupfélag , a kind of trading cooperative, Kaupfélag Þingeyinga , founded in 1882 , began its work in the town in 1885. The town was granted city rights in 1894. Norwegians built and operated a herring salt station around 1900.

Culture and sights

Safnasafnið ("the Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum") is an art museum founded in 1995 near the village.

The local church, Svalbarðskirkja , was built in 1957.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Svalbarðseyri there is a meat processing factory, a primary school, a swimming pool , guest houses and a small sports field.

traffic

The Hringvegur , Iceland's most important traffic artery, runs east of the town . A small, orange-colored lighthouse ( Svalbarðseyrarviti ) is located in the village on the banks of Eyjafjörður.
