Vaðlaheiði is a mountain range in northern Iceland near the city of Akureyri .

Location and surroundings

Vaðlaheiði is located in the east of the municipality Svalbarðsströnd east of the main town Svalbarðseyri and in the west of the municipality Þingeyjarsveit . Vaðlaheiði is located east of the Eyjafjörður fjord and extends in a north-south direction. To the east is the Fnjóskadalur valley . The mountains are relatively flat and are therefore often referred to as the plateau . It reaches a height of 700 meters. Geologically, the mountains consist of layered basaltic lava .

Politically, the area is part of the district (sýsla) Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla .

Importance for road traffic

The Hringvegur , the ring road of the island of Iceland and one of the most important transport connections in the country, used to lead over the 520 meter high Steinsskarð pass in Vaðlaheiði. This road was built in 1930. Since 1985 the road has been running further north over the Víkurskarð crossing , as this route is a little further but less steep. In order to further shorten the distance between Akureyri and Húsavík , a 7200 meter long tunnel, the Vaðlaheiðargöng , is currently being built through the mountains from Fnjóskadalur to Eyjafjörður, which was supposed to be opened in 2010, but will now be built later.

Trivia

At the top of the plateau there used to be a shed and it was probably the longest word in the Icelandic language with the name Vaðlaheiðarvegavinnuverkfærageymsluskúr , in German about alluvial plateau moving work tool storage shed .
