The Fnjóskadalur is a valley in northern Iceland . It is located in the municipality of Þingeyjarsveit .

location

Fnjóskadalur is located about ten kilometers northeast of Akureyri , east of the Eyjafjörður fjord . It is separated from this by the Vaðlaheiði mountain range and runs roughly parallel to it in a south-north direction. It is crossed by the Fnjóská river , from which its name is derived.

Politically, the area is part of the district (sýsla) Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla .

vegetation

The Fnjóskadalur is unusually forested by Icelandic standards

Geologically, the valley is made up of basalt, which is covered in many places by gravel and sand. The fertile soil here allows for a strong agricultural use by Icelandic standards. In the valley there is also the Vaglaskógur forest , one of the largest in Iceland. Birch and spruce trees grow up to 14 meters high here.

tourism

In 1908 a stone arch bridge was built over the Fnjóská at the northern end of the Vaglaskógur, which is considered the first of its kind in Iceland and is still a sight today. In the same year the area was placed under nature protection. Today it is a popular holiday destination and attracts campers and mountain bikers, among others . The Fnjóskadalur is crossed by the Hringvegur , the Icelandic ring road , and is therefore easily accessible.
