geography
Just like the place of the same name on its shore, Laugarvatn is located in the area of the municipality of Bláskógabyggð in Laugardalur .
At 2.14 km², its area is significantly smaller than that of the neighboring, south-southeastern Apavatn , with which it is connected via the Hólaá River . To the northwest of the lake is the mountain Laugarvatnsfjall .
history
It is said that the bodies of Iceland's last Catholic bishop , Jón Arason von Hólar , and his sons were washed in the lake after they were executed in the 16th century . A laug is a warm spring and vatn is the Icelandic word for water, or rather lake. There are warm springs here in the lake.
traffic
Laugarvatn is located on Laugarvatnsvegur , which when coming from the south changes its direction to the east. This part is part of the Golden Circle , the popular tourist route. From the west of Þingvellir comes the Gjábakkavegur
and then leads to the geyser in Haukadalur .
