The Apavatn is a lake in the south of Iceland , east of the Þingvallavatn . The lake, which is located in the municipality of Grímsnes og Grafningur and Bláskógabyggð , is known for its abundance of fish.

The area of the Apavatn is 13.6 km². It is located a little south of the smaller Laugarvatn , with which it is connected via the Hólaá River , on the Laugardalur . The only outflow of the Apavatn, Hagaós, leads after a kilometer into the Brúará , which flows east of the lake to the south. The mountain Mosfell is located southeast of the lake .
history
A legend tells that Sighvatur Þórðarson , a poet in the Middle Ages in the 11th century , got his gift for poetry by eating fish from this lake. Another tells of the murderous clashes that are said to have taken place between the farmers of the two hamlets on the lake, Efra- and Neðra-Apavatn , in the 13th century .
