The rural community of Grímsnes og Grafningur ( Isl. Grímsnes- og Grafningshreppur ) is an Icelandic municipality in the region of Suðurland in southwest Iceland.
On January 1, 2019, the community had 493 inhabitants. The largest settlement and the administrative center is Borg with 117 inhabitants. The second largest settlement is Sólheimar with 85 inhabitants.
geography
The municipality is not a contiguous area and is divided into three parts.
In the south of the southern part of the municipality is the mountain Ingólfsfjall ; in the east of the southern part is the table volcano Vörðufell and the lake Hestvatn . The Grímsnes volcanic system and the Hvítá river shape the landscape. In the north of the southern part of the municipality are the lake Þingvallavatn , which flows away via the suction through the Úlfljótsvatn and the Álftavatn , and the Apavatn . Between the Þingvallavatn and the place Hveragerði , which forms a separate municipality, lies the Hrómundartindur volcano ; to the west of this is the Hengill with its elongated volcanic system.
The central part of the municipality is a narrow strip that is surrounded by the municipality of Bláskógabyggð . To the north of this strip is the mountain Skjaldbreiður .
In the northern part of the municipality is the Þórisjökull glacier and part of the Langjökull with its side glacier Geitlandsjökull .
history
The community was created on June 1, 1998 from the merger of the two rural communities Grímsnes ( Grímsneshreppur ) and Grafningur ( Grafningshreppur ).
The settlement Írafoss og Ljósafoss, which had 15 inhabitants in 1997, has now been abandoned.
