Double flower

Tuberous begonia with filled male and unfilled female flowers

As a double flower to flower or flower refer to operations where the elements of the show apparatus for breeding are increased. For filled florets are crown- or tepals increased over the natural number addition, usually by stamens , rarely the fruit leaves are converted into petals. In the asteroid family (from the subfamily Asteroideae ) one speaks of filled heads or baskets when the tubular flowers (disc flowers) are converted into ray flowers (ray flowers).

Double-flowering plants that do not belong to a recognized cultivar or whose cultivar name is not known are often denoted with the addition fl. Pl. (Latin flore pleno, "with full bloom") after the scientific name.

Double garden chrysanthemums ( Chrysanthemum × morifolium )

Since filled florets usually only the stamens are affected by the change, the female floral organs remain functional: Thus, a hawthorn form fruit when a midland hawthorn as a pollinator is nearby. In tuberous begonias , only the male flowers are filled. With tulips , the additional tepals do not arise from stamens, but these are often multiplied themselves. In the "radiant" daisy family (Asteroideae, see above), however, the ray florets are sterile, and this property is also transferred to the transformed tubular florets.

Because the stamens have receded or are no longer accessible , double flowers usually do not provide food for bees and other pollinating insects . Environmental and beekeeping associations therefore demand the use of plants with unfilled flowers.
