The municipality of Ölfus ( Icelandic Sveitarfélagið Ölfus ) is an Icelandic municipality in the South Urland region .

On January 1, 2019, Ölfus had 2,153 inhabitants. The most important settlement is the port town of Þorlákshöfn with 1654 inhabitants, Árbæjarhverfi had 63 inhabitants.

geography

The municipality of Ölfus encloses the municipality of Hveragerði . To the west of Hveragerði is the Hellisheiði plain , to the north of which is Mount Hengill with its extensive volcanic system. In the east of the municipality lies the mouth of the Ölfusá , the most water-rich river in Iceland.

The municipality borders in the southwest on Grindavíkurbær , in the northwest on Garðabær , Kópavogsbær , Reykjavíkurborg and Mosfellsbær . In the northeast is Grímsnes- og Grafningshreppur , in the east Flóahreppur and Sveitarfélagið Árborg .

Culture and sights

The Búri Cave is located northwest of the main town of the municipality .
