geography

The municipality is not a contiguous area and is divided into three parts.

In the south of the southern part of the municipality is the mountain Ingólfsfjall ; in the east of the southern part is the table volcano Vörðufell and the lake Hestvatn . The Grímsnes volcanic system and the Hvítá river shape the landscape. In the north of the southern part of the municipality are the lake Þingvallavatn , which flows away via the suction through the Úlfljótsvatn and the Álftavatn , and the Apavatn . Between the Þingvallavatn and the place Hveragerði , which forms a separate municipality, lies the Hrómundartindur volcano ; to the west of this is the Hengill with its elongated volcanic system.

The central part of the municipality is a narrow strip that is surrounded by the municipality of Bláskógabyggð . To the north of this strip is the mountain Skjaldbreiður .

In the northern part of the municipality is the Þórisjökull glacier and part of the Langjökull with its side glacier Geitlandsjökull .

history

The community was created on June 1, 1998 from the merger of the two rural communities Grímsnes ( Grímsneshreppur ) and Grafningur ( Grafningshreppur ).

The settlement Írafoss og Ljósafoss, which had 15 inhabitants in 1997, has now been abandoned.
