Þórisjökull from the Uxarhryggarvegur slope |
The Þórisjökull (Thórisjökull) is a glacier and table volcano in western Iceland in the municipality of Borgarbyggð and Grímsnes og Grafningur . It reaches a height of 1350 meters. The volume of the glaciated volcano is estimated in recent literature (Eason et al., 2015) to be 10.7 km 3 .
location
The glacier volcano is located between Langjökull in the east and the Ok shield volcano in the west, which can be seen from afar .
volcano
It is a glaciated tabular volcano from the last Ice Age , which consists mainly of palagonite . Originally, the glacier was probably part of the large Langjökull glacier shield until the 18th century .
Recent studies clearly show that the glacier belongs to the Prestahnúkur volcanic system and that there are active crevice systems under it.
Surname
Its name comes from the troll Þóri (from the Grettis saga ).
Close to the Kaldidalur highland slope
The highland slope Kaldidalur runs through the valley between Ok and Þórisjökull. The glacier is to the east of the slope that runs along it for a long way.
Rockclimbing
From the pass at 720 meters at the cairn Beinakerlingin can go up to the glacier.
