The Basilica Iulia (also Germanized Julia ) was an ancient hall building at the Roman Forum in Rome .

The construction of the basilica was probably 54 BC. BC by Gaius Iulius Caesar on the site of a smaller previous building, the Basilica Sempronia , and a row of shops, the tabernae veteres . The still unfinished Basilica Iulia was built in 46 BC. Inaugurated at the time of Caesar's dictatorship. As is often the case with Roman buildings, the name is derived from the gentile name of Caesar. Shortly after its completion under Augustus , the basilica was damaged by fire and rebuilt in an enlarged form and opened in 12 BC. Inaugurated by Augustus in the name of his adopted sons Gaius and Lucius Caesar . The centum viral court met in the basilica during the imperial era . After being destroyed by fire again in AD 283, it was rebuilt again under Diocletian .

With a length of 101 m and a width of 49 m, the Basilica Iulia was the largest basilica directly on the Roman Forum. It was on the south side between the Vicus Iugarius in the west and the Vicus Tuscus in the east. The basilica had a high nave and galleries over the side aisles as well as an apse for the judge's seat.

Today's remains give little indication. Interesting, however, are the game boards from ancient times, which are scratched into the steps and refer to idle pastime.
