Mýrdalur ( isl. "Swampy valley", isl. Mýrdalshreppur ) is an Icelandic community in the region Suðurland . On January 1, 2019, the community had 695 inhabitants.


The municipality, which forms the southern tip of Iceland, borders Mýrdalsjökull in the north . To the west is the town Rangárþing eystra in the east Skaftárhreppur .


The parish was established on January 1, 1984 from the rural parishes of Dyrhólahreppur and Hvammshreppur .


Beach at Vík í Mýrdal

The largest town in the municipality is Vík í Mýrdal , the southernmost town on the island of Iceland, famous for its beach.


The community can be reached via the Hringvegur . The distance to the capital Reykjavík is about 187 kilometers by road from Vík í Mýrdal.
