The rural community Flói ( Icelandic Flóahreppur ) is an Icelandic municipality in the South Urland region .
On January 1, 2019, the community had 667 inhabitants.
geography
The municipality borders on Árborg and Ölfus to the west, Grímsnes og Grafningur to the north, Skeiða- og Gnúpverjahreppur to the northeast, Ásahreppur to the east and Rangárþing ytra to the southeast . The eastern border is formed by the river Þjórsá , the northern border is the river Hvítá . The North Atlantic lies south of the municipality .
In the south-east lies the settlement Villingaholt on Villingaholtsvatn .
history
The municipality was formed in June 2006 by the merger of the rural communities Hraungerði ( Hraungerðishreppur ), Villingaholt ( Villingaholtshreppur ) and Gaulverjabær ( Gaulverjabæjarhreppur , also Bæjarhreppur ). When choosing the new municipality name, Flóahreppur prevailed over the suggested names Flóabyggð, Flóamannahreppur and Flóasveit.
