Kópavogur [ 'kʰouːpaˌvɔˑɣʏr ] ( Eng . "Little Bay of the Seal Pups "; Isl. Also Kópavogsbær ) is a municipality in southwest Iceland . It is located in the Reykjavík metropolitan area and is the second largest municipality in Iceland with 36,975 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019).

geography

The municipality is divided into three non-contiguous parts. The northwest part includes the city of Kópavogur itself and borders Reykjavíkurborg and Garðabær to the south . To the east is Lake Elliðavatn .

The southeastern part also borders on these two communities, in the extreme southeast also on Ölfus .

The north-eastern part is bordered by Mosfellsbær to the north, Reykjavíkurborg to the west and Ölfus to the east. To the east is Mount Vífilsfell .

history

During the Danish trade monopoly from 1602 to 1787, the document that guaranteed Denmark complete sovereignty over Iceland was signed here in 1662 .

In the 1930s, Kópavogur was hardly inhabited until it was used as a building site for holiday homes for the Reykjavík population. Due to the increasing rural exodus of the inhabitants of remote regions of the country, settlement in the capital area, which has now almost grown together, led to a large population growth in the area around the place Kópavogur.

Culture and sights

Kópavogur, Smáratorg Tower.

The city has a diverse cultural offering, including facilities such as the extensive art collection of the Gerðarsafn Museum , which opened in 1994 , mainly with works by Icelandic artists such as the sculptor Gerður Helgadóttir and the painter Magnús Á. Árnason . The windows of the striking Kópavogskirkja next to the gallery, consecrated in 1963, are also made by the artist.

Also of interest is the Natural History Museum (Náttúrufræðistofa Kópavogs) with its departments on the zoology and geology of the country.

economy

Kópavogur is also home to the largest shopping center in Iceland, the Smáralind , on the site of which the fifth tallest structure and tallest building in Iceland, the Smáratorg Tower , is located. Kópavogur is the seat of numerous companies, including Promens .
