geography
Vífilsfell is about 25 km from the capital Reykjavík to the south, not far from the Litla Kaffistófan rest area on the ring road . The volcano is located in the municipality of Kópavogsbær , on the municipal border with Ölfus and on Hellisheiði .
Volcanism
The mountain is a palagonite cone from the Ice Age and 655 m high. It belongs to the mountain range of Bláfjöll , the most popular ski area for the residents of Reykjavík, and at the same time to the volcanic system of the Brennisteinsfjöll .
Surname
The name comes from Vífill , one of the followers of Ingólfur Arnarson , who was the first (official) settler in Iceland. According to a legend, Vífill often went fishing in Faxaflói Bay from Grotto near Reykjavík . Before that, he always did a little hike up the mountain to see if the weather was favorable. Even in a straight line that would be 16-18 km.
