Tim Cole (full name: Connor Timothy Cole ; born April 2, 1950 in Moses Lake , Washington ) is a German-American Internet publicist, columnist and author .

Life

Tim Cole was born to Connor Garton Cole, a US Air Force officer and Protestant military chaplain , and Irene Elenore Cole from Aachen. He spent his childhood in the United States, where he had to move frequently due to his father's relocation, including to Alaska, New Jersey, Texas, Montana, California and Washington.

In 1961 he returned to Germany with his mother and brother Theodor Clifford Herbert Cole, where he initially lived with his grandparents in Schwetzingen . He attended the Hebel-Gymnasium in Schwetzingen and the Wirtschaftsgymnasium in Heidelberg. In 1968 he returned to the United States, where he graduated from Central Union High School in El Centro, California, where his father had retired after his retirement, and enrolled at the University of Southern California (UCLA). To avoid compulsory military service during the Vietnam War , he moved to Germany again in 1969. He completed a traineeship at the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung in Heidelberg and continued his studies at the University of Maryland , where he studied history and political science. In 1977 he was awarded the degree "Associate in Arts" with the addition of summa cum laude .

After completing his internship, Cole went to the Stuttgarter Nachrichten , where he worked in the local editorial team as a police reporter, deputy journalist and head of environmental protection. From 1976 to 1978 he worked in the Baden-Württemberg state editorial office of the Bild newspaper . He then switched to auto motor und sport in the magazine department. In 1979 he moved to the founding editorial team of Audio magazine as head of text and one year later took on the task of building up the sister magazine stereoplay in Germany as chief editor, which was initially operated by Motor Presse Stuttgart as a licensed edition of the magazine of the same name by the Italian publisher Editione Suono.

In 1980 Cole separated from Motor Presse Stuttgart, began a career as a freelance journalist and wrote for the German edition of Playboy and for Diners Club magazine and for a number of other clients. In 1986 he founded CDS Verlag together with Gerhard Dolde and Hans-Jörg Schwab and developed the magazine reisemobil international , which is one of the leading magazines for motorhomes today, as well as the industry service Reisemobil-Report.

In 1989 Cole became the founder and director of the "Multimedia editorial group" at Motor Presse Stuttgart. In this role he had overall responsibility for several of the publisher's magazines, including connect , Zounds (discontinued after six issues), video and videoaktiv , where he was also editor-in-chief. Under his aegis, the magazine was discontinued in 1993. In addition, he coordinated the publishing house's activities in the field of electronic media (at that time e.g. btx ) and was responsible for setting up the “multimedia measurement laboratory”, which, as an internal service provider, looked after the group’s titles.

In 1992 Cole left Motor Presse for the second time and moved to Munich, where he set up as an Internet journalist. He was the founder and editor-in-chief of the first German-language industry service Internet Report (IWT-Verlag) and wrote for numerous business and PC magazines, including Capital and Computer Bild . In 1998 he became editor-in-chief of the business magazine Net Investor. There he developed u. a. a stock market index of the leading new economy companies, the NICE index, which has been a regular part of economic reporting on the television station n-tv for many years .

In 1999 his bestseller Success Factor Internet was published by Econ-Verlag . As a result, Cole was increasingly active as a speaker and lecturer on topics of the new economy and the digital economy . From 2000 to 2001, he and Ossi Urchs hosted the eTalk program , which was broadcast by n-tv and later n24 during the CeBIT computer fair .

In 2000 the book The Customer Cartel was published, which Cole had written together with the management consultant Paul Gromball. It describes the “new power of the customer” in the Internet age.

In 2004, Cole was one of the founders of the Kuppinger Cole + Partner analyst group , which focuses on digital identity and identity management. In 2007 he and his partners organized the European Identity Conference at the Forum Deutsches Museum in Munich, which has since developed into an important meeting for the global identity industry.

In June 2008, together with web designer Alexander Broy, author Michael Kausch, media entrepreneur Ossi Urchs and then editor of Computerwoche magazine , Christoph Witte, he founded the digital culture blog Czyslansky , of which he is still a member.

In 2016, Tim Cole became editor-in-chief of Smart Industry , a business magazine specializing in the “ Internet of Things ”, reporting on technologies and current market trends. Cole is also the author of the Smart Industry Blog.

Cole lives and works in Sankt Michael im Lungau . As a columnist for the medium- sized company magazine Pro Firma ( Haufe-Verlag ), he regularly comments on current developments in the online scene and in modern corporate practice. In addition, he founded the consulting company “new-media-training.de”, which organizes media and camera training for managers.
