Moses Lake is a city with the status of City of Grant County in the US -amerikanischen State Washington .

geography

At a distance of about 40 kilometers is Ephrata , the administrative seat ( county seat ) of Grant County in the northwest. About 100 kilometers away is Ellensburg in the west. The northeastern city of Spokane is about 150 kilometers away. The Highway Interstate 90 affected Moses Lake in the south. The city is located on the eponymous Moses Lake .

history

Settlers settled in the region as early as 1880. After negotiations with the Indian chief Moses and a land swap, they founded a settlement, which, however, was only named "Moses Lake" in 1938, as was the nearby lake in honor of the chief. In 1942, Larson Air Force Base was opened as a training place for bomber and fighter pilots of the United States Army Air Forces , but it was closed again briefly after the end of World War II . It was later put back into operation for test flights by the Boeing aircraft works.

economy

In 1984 Union Carbide (now REC Silicon ) set up a silicon factory in Moses Lake. In 2010, SGL Carbon and BMW jointly opened a carbon fiber factory here for the production of materials for particularly lightweight automotive parts and invested US $ 100 million in this. By 2015, the capacity will be increased to 9,000 tons of carbon fibers per year.
