The Hebel-Gymnasium is a general high school in Schwetzingen, Baden-Württemberg . It is named after the Baden dialect poet Johann Peter Hebel , who died in Schwetzingen.

history

The building was erected in 1842. In 1845 a trade school was set up in cooperation with the Higher Citizens School, which had existed since 1846. This was dissolved in 1853. From 1860 an expanded elementary school was created as a transition and in 1868 a new, four-class higher citizen school was set up, which found a new home in the Friedrichschule building on Kleine Planken street . From 1903 further conversions took place. First in 1903 in a six-class Realgymnasium, in 1904 in a Realschule, after moving to Moltkestrasse in 1923 in an Oberrealschule and in 1930 in a Realgymnasium. This was initially called the Hebelschule and, since 1954, the Hebel Gymnasium . In 1963 the company moved to the new building on Goethestrasse, which was started in 1961. Since 2004 the school has been an eight-year high school (G8).

Profile and special features

The Hebel-Gymnasium is now an “ open all-day school ” with the possibility of education and support for students on at least three days of the week with at least seven hours a day.

When registering for the 5th grade, students have the choice between Latin and French as a second foreign language (after English at primary school). The high school also has a singing class, which includes grades 5 to 7. From the 8th grade onwards, a linguistic profile with Spanish as a third foreign language and, on the other hand, a natural science profile with the subject network of natural science and technology ("NwT") as the main subject is offered.

The Hebel-Gymnasium has been recognized as a MINT- friendly school. Since 2012, it has also participated as a “courage school” in the initiative School without Racism - School with Courage , with the band Irie Révoltés acting as school sponsor . Furthermore, the Hebel-Gymnasium cooperates as a partner school with the House of Astronomy in Heidelberg .

A branch of the Schwetzingen city library has been housed in the Hebel-Gymnasium building since 2009.
