Thomas Wagner (journalist)

Thomas Wagner (born November 14, 1955 in Mannheim ) is a German journalist and university professor.

life and work

After graduating from the Hebel-Gymnasium in Schwetzingen in 1975 and doing community service as a nurse in the hospital in 1978, Wagner began studying German and philosophy in Heidelberg in 1979 and in Brighton (Sussex) in 1980/81. From 1979 to 1990 he worked as an art, literature and film critic, among others for the Heidelberg weekly newspaper "Communale" and from 1985 on regularly for the magazine Das Arbeiter . Since 1986 he has been writing - initially as a freelancer - for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung with a focus on literary and art criticism. In January 1991 he became editor in the features section for the visual arts department , which he headed from 1992 to 2007 together with the design department and - alongside Eduard Beaucamp - was responsible for discussing contemporary art. He has been a freelance journalist since 2008, he writes regularly for the art magazine Art .

From 1995 to 1997 Wagner was visiting professor for art history at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg . In 1998 he took on a substitute professorship for art history at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . Since 1999 he has been an honorary professor in Nuremberg. In 2002 he was a founding board member of the German Society for Design Theory and Research (DGTF).

In 2006 he published a volume with selected texts on artists and exhibitions under the title “Freehand - Perceptions of Art”, and his 2007 book Licht im Schacht von Babel gathers his essays on major exhibitions such as the Kassel documenta 12 and the Venice Biennale .
