Siegfried Gohr (born February 24, 1949 in Aachen ) is a German art historian , curator and freelance publicist .

Life

Gohr studied art history, archeology and philosophy in Cologne and Tübingen. In 1974 he received his doctorate and took on a scientific traineeship at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne.

From 1978 to 1985 he was director of the Kölner Kunsthalle, then until 1991 director of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. In addition to his curatorial work, he was particularly responsible for supplementing the collection with a focus on the European avant-garde after the Second World War. From 1993 to 2004 he was professor for art history and media history at the University of Design in Karlsruhe. From 2006 until his retirement on July 31, 2014, he was Professor of Art History at the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

Curatorial activity

Gohr curated monographic and thematic exhibitions on 20th century art. Including on topics such as: Expressionist sculpture, Europe / America, picture controversy , a retrospective on art since 1960, and many artists such as Fernand Léger , Paul Klee , Max Beckmann , Pablo Picasso , Marcel Duchamp , Willem de Kooning , Jasper Johns , Roy Lichtenstein , Georges Rouault , Georg Baselitz , Markus Lüpertz , AR Penck , Antonius Höckelmann and Sigmar Polke . He was jointly responsible for the selection of the works for the exhibition 60 Years - 60 Works: Art from the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 2009 in the Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin.

Publications

Publication of more than 300 texts on the museum situation, on modern and contemporary art and on the artist's self-image in the modern age . Monographs on Pablo Picasso, René Magritte and Markus Lüpertz. Catalog raisonnés on Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Max Beckmann and Jörg Immendorff.
