Map with borders of the former municipality of Hartem

Hartem it is a district of the municipality-free area Osterheide in the district of Heidekreis , in the Lüneburg Heath ( Lower Saxony ). Hartem was a village and a municipality in Ostheidmark in the old district of Fallingbostel . The Vitzen, Brockhof and Berghof farms also belonged to the Hartem community.

History

The origin of the name Hartem is derived from the name "Hartmar". That was the name of the elder of the clan. Hartem has been rural since the 12th century. The Brockhof, an old feudal farm, is perhaps the old noble farm of Hatmere. A document from the Hodenberg document book names a knight Clemens von Hatmere in 1371. The Berghof can be documented until 1438. Nearby graves from the Bronze Age show that there was a settlement here more than 3000 years ago. The yard totaled 522 acres (137 hectares).

The total size of the municipality of Hartem was 1003 hectares , 100% of which fell into the military training area. Hartem belonged to the Ostheidmark region with good soil. But it was precisely these heavy soils that could not be tilled in ancient times (see also Heidmark # The former cultural area of the Ostheidmark ). The main source of income was the heather sheep keeping until the 19th century . In the area there were many "desolate courtyards", which was partly due to the aforementioned soils, on which the residents could not generate sufficient income, and in the Lüneburg War of Succession (1371-1388) many properties were also destroyed. In 1818 Hartem received a school building. The first teacher until 1841 was JH Uetzmann, who took up the position of schoolmaster in 1816 at the age of 18 for 40 thalers a year.

In the course of the establishment of the Bergen military training area , the resettlement of the population and the evacuation of the entire area took place from summer 1935 to May 1936. The farm owners were compensated, the buildings were mostly demolished. (see Heidmark # Destruction of the Ostheidmark in the time of National Socialism ). The Meier family, owners of the Berghof, for example, were relocated to Lutterloh in the Celle district and now run a new farm here.

Population development

Hartem had the following population development:
1770 - 87 inhabitants
1821 - 123 inhabitants
1933 - 130 inhabitants
