Gullni hringurinn (literally: The Golden Ring or The Golden Round Trip ) is a popular itinerary in southwest and southern Iceland . It is mostly known to foreign tourists under the English name of the Golden Circle . Starting from the capital Reykjavík , you can visit three of the island's most famous sights in one day trip. The tour is around 300 kilometers long, takes 4–5 hours of driving time, a total of 8–10 hours, depending on how much time you allow yourself at the individual stations.

The Gullfoss waterfall

The three main attractions on this route are:

• the former Thing site Þingvellir in the national park of the same name
  • the Drekkingarhylur drowning pool
  • the nearby Öxarárfoss waterfall
• the geothermal area Haukadalur with
  • the Great Geyser (namesake of all geysers ),
  • the Strokkur geyser , which erupts reliably about every 10 minutes,
  • the thermal spring Blesi ,
• the Gullfoss waterfall , whose name "golden waterfall" coined the term Goldner Zirkel.

Bus tours from Reykjavík, which take around 8.5 hours, often stop at Kerið volcanic crater .

The area also includes:

• the hot springs around Laugarvatn ,
• the former bishopric of Skálholt .
