The geyser is located next to the seldom erupting Great Geyser in the hot water valley Haukadalur in the municipality of Bláskógabyggð in the south of the island. Its outbreaks occur regularly with an interval of about 10 minutes and sometimes up to three times in quick succession. The boiling water column of the Strokkur reaches a height of 25 to 35 meters.

The Haukadalur with its geysers, along with Þingvellir and the Gullfoss waterfall, is part of the Golden Circle , in which the most important sights in southern Iceland are located.
