Rauðalækur, stream and settlement
|
Rauðalækur is a settlement in the south of Iceland .
Rauðalækur is the Icelandic word for red brook , the name of the brook east of the settlement over which the ring road runs here. The settlement goes back to a dairy which was founded here in 1902 by 24 farms from the surrounding communities. Their engines were powered by the water from Rauðalækjarfoss. There was only enough milk available for processing over the summer. Now there is a car repair shop, laundry and saddlery here. The settlement has 60 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) . Rauðalækur is located in the municipality Rangárþing ytra (1636 inhabitants) about 5 km northwest of Hella (largest place in the municipality, 865 inhabitants).
