Characteristics
Drangsnes [ ˈtrauŋsnɛˑs ] ( Eng . "Rock peninsula") is located on the northeastern bank of Steingrímsfjörður near the town of Hólmavík . The small, lonely village is characterized by a few small houses and a salt fish factory, so fishing and processing is the main source of income for the place.
Grímsey rock island
Off the coast to the southeast is the rocky island of Grímsey (not identical to the larger island of the same name in front of Eyjafjörður ), on which there is a lighthouse built in 1949 .
According to legend , that rock is a petrified troll woman who wanted to dig a ditch between Iceland and the West Fjords and - surprised by the rising sun - froze to stone.
Transport links
Drangsnes is on road 645, which leads north as road 643 to Djúpavík , and to the airfield in Gjögur on Reykjarfjörður . The center of the Westfjords , Ísafjörður, can be reached west of the village via road 61.
Population development
The population decline between 1997 and 2006 was 29%. Since then the population has stagnated.
