places
The now abandoned place Gjögur on Reykjarfjörður was an important fishing port in the 19th century. Today there is Gjögur Airport , which Eagle Air flies to twice a week from Reykjavík .
In Djúpavík , where an important herring factory was operated between 1935 and 1954, there is now a privately operated hotel. The herring factory is maintained by the hotel owners, who also offer tours of the factory. Today it is used as a local museum and for annually changing art exhibitions.
Other places are the eponymous place Árnes, where the church and a community center are located, Finbogasstaðir, where the primary school is located, Norðurfjörður on the fjord of the same name, and Bad Krossnes next to the eponymous farm. In Norðurfjörður you will find the mayor's office, a petrol station, a small shop and a restaurant, as well as the local fishing port with a cold store.
There is another abandoned herring factory in Ingólfsfjörður , but it is somewhat smaller than the one in Djúpavík and is not open to visitors. The jeep runway ends shortly after the Ófeigsfjörður farm at the fjord of the same name , which is only inhabited during the summer.
Population development
The population decline between 1997 and 2005 was 32%.

Trivia
Árnes is the only municipality in Iceland that cannot be reached by road all year round: the winter service on the road to Holmavík will cease after Christmas. The road is not paved.
The herring factory in Djúpavík and Reykjarfjörður served as the backdrop for some scenes in Justice League , the local population can be seen in the film as extras alongside Batman ( Ben Affleck ) and Aquaman ( Jason Momoa ).
