The rural community of Tálknafjörður ( Icelandic Tálknafjarðarhreppur ) is located in northwest Iceland in the Westfjords region .

On January 1st, 2019 the community had 258 inhabitants, 275 of them (as of 2007) lived in the town of the same name.

On the land side, the municipality is completely enclosed by the municipality of Vesturbyggð . An association with Vesturbyggð was rejected by the population in a referendum on October 8, 2005.

Tálknafjörður is a small fishing village in the fjord of the same name , which is part of the Suðurfirðir Vestfjarða . The former name of the place was Sveinseyri. It is 161 kilometers by road to Ísafjörður , the largest city in the West Fjords, and 403 kilometers by road to Reykjavík . This route can be shortened considerably by taking the ferry from Brjánslækur to Stykkishólmur . Tálknafjörður is known, among other things, for its forest, which was laid out near the town center from 1940.
