Reykjarfjörður á Ströndum is a fjord on the east side of the Westfjords in Iceland .
The fjord is south of Trékyllisvík Bay and the Reykjanes peninsula and north of Veiðileysa fjord . There were three small villages here:
- Kúvikur on the south bank is now deserted and used to be the area's trading post.
- Djúpavík is 4 km to the west, where herring was caught intensively in the first half of the 20th century. Now there is a secluded hotel in a building of the old herring factory.
- Gjögur in the northeast at Sætrafjall. Sharks were caught and processed here. Now there is an airfield here .
Strandavegur (road 463) largely circles Reykjarfjörður. This road was opened in 1965, is not paved and is often impassable in winter. Today there is only one farm in the fjord where sheep are kept, some summer houses, all others are deserted.
The nickname á Ströndum ( Isl. On the beaches , what is meant is the former Strandasýsla district ) is used to distinguish it from Reykjarfjörður nyrðri , which is a good 40 km north in the Norður-Ísafjarðarsýsla district. Other fjords Reykjarfjörður is located in Arnarfjörður on the west side of the Westfjords and here in Ísafjarðardjúp . All four are in the Westfjords.
