The Gjögur Airport ( IATA code: GJR ; ICAO: BigJ ) is an airfield , where the population of the Árneshreppurdistriktes in the West Fjords in northwestern Iceland , on the coast of Húnaflói Bay , served. The airport is operated temporarily by an AFIS controller and is only open for Eagle Air flights , which operate once a week in summer and twice a week in winter. Gjögur Airport is very important for the local population. In winter, the flight connection is the only way to reach the region as the road is impassable. The Icelandic government operates these flights to supply the population with food and other things and also to transport passengers. Eagle Air is the only airline that flies to this region.
