Húnaflói is a wide bay in northwest Iceland between the West Fjords and the Skagi peninsula .

Surname

Húni in Icelandic means “young polar bear”, flói means “bay”. The name Húnaflói means "Bay of the young polar bear". This can be explained by the fact that here, as in other places in the north of Iceland, polar bears are sometimes driven with the drift ice from Greenland and drift their beings here.

Fjords, lagoon and peninsulas

This bay forks in the west into Steingrímsfjörður , Bjarnarfjörður , Kollafjörður and Bitrufjörður , which belong to the Westfjords.

To the east are Hrútafjörður and Miðfjörður , where the small settlement Laugarbakki and the 600 inhabitant Hvammstangi are located.

The Vatnsnes peninsula separates it from Húnafjörður with the towns of Blönduós and Skagaströnd .

The southern coast of Húnafjörður is determined by the Þingeyrasandur , which separates the Hóp lagoon from the Húnaflói.

The eastern border of the Húnaflói forms the Skagi peninsula.
