The Vatnsnes peninsula is located in the north of Iceland . It is bounded by the Miðfjörður fjord and the Húnaflói bay . On the peninsula there are mountains that rise up to over 1000 meters. The peninsula belongs to the municipality of Húnaþing vestra .

You can go around the mountainous peninsula on an unpaved road. The small town of Hvammstangi with its seal museum lies on it. At the top of Vatnsnes is the abandoned Hindisvík farm . The associated small bay is known for its large seal colony. Both the ringed seal and the common seal can be found there .

If you drive inland from Húnaflóí Bay, you will soon reach the approximately 15-meter-high basalt rock Hvítserkur .

From this side of the bay you can look across the Hóp lagoon to the Skagi peninsula , near which is the town of Blönduós .

In front of it you can see the small black church of Þingeyrar on a peninsula in the Hóp , where the oldest monastery in Iceland once stood.
