The Skagi peninsula is located in the north of Iceland .
Surname
In Icelandic , the term skagi describes a peninsula .
location
It is located west of Skagafjörður and east of Húnaflói Bay .
description
The tip of the peninsula, Skagaheiði , is rather flat. On the other hand, the mountains rise to about 750 m to the south.
The coasts of the peninsula are mostly flat and have no bays.
geology
Until about 7 million years ago, the then active rift zone from Snæfellsnes ran across the Skagi peninsula and from there into the Arctic Ocean . At that time there was active volcanism on Skagi. Then the rift zone shifted to the east.
Settlement and agriculture
Most of the outer peninsula is not (no longer) inhabited. However, the beaches are used for rearing eider ducks. The farmers who own the land benefit from the down , but also from the driftwood that has washed ashore . The pastures are used for sheep and horse breeding .
On the west side of the peninsula there are still some working farms.
The small towns Sauðárkrókur and Blönduós border the peninsula in the southwest and southeast.
The village of Skagaströnd is also to the west of Skagi .
Transport links
The Skagastrandarvegur, road 74, connects Blönduós on the ring road with the town of Skagaströnd over a length of 22 km . Further north, the 83 km long Skagavegur , road 745, continues to Sauðárkrókur and circles the tip of the peninsula, whereas road 744 crosses the peninsula a little north of Blönduós and also leads to Sauðárkrókur in Skagafjörður .
The ring road is the main connection between Húnavatnssýsla ( Blönduós ) and Skagafjörður ( Varmahlíð ) over the Bolstaðahlið or Vatnsskarð pass .
There are no other roads through the peninsula that has many lakes.
An airfield has been set up south of Blönduós and has been in operation since 1973.
polar bears
In 2008, 2 polar bears were sighted and shot on Skagi. They probably got there with drift ice from Greenland . In one case, an attempt was made to save the animal and a specialist was flown in from Denmark for expensive money, but the polar bear was shot before he could take action.
