The Miðfjörður is a tributary of the Húnaflói in northwest Iceland .
The Miðfjörður is about 3.5 km wide and 14 km into the country. To the west, the headland Heggstaðanes separates it from Hrútafjörður . The town of Hvammstangi on the Vatnsnes peninsula is located on its eastern bank . The Miðfjarðará flows into the fjord after 40 km. This rises north of the Arnarvatnsheiði .
In the south, the ring road
approaches the fjord within 1 km. On the east bank, the main street Hvammstangavegur runs
to the place. As it continues to the north, it becomes the Vatnsnesvegur side road
around the peninsula. The Heggstaðanesvegur
, also a side road, opens up the southern part of the western peninsula.
The most famous farm in Miðfjörður is Bjarg, the birthplace of the saga hero Grettir . Churches are located on the farms of Melstaður, Staðarbakki and Efri-Núpur.
