The Hrútafjörður is a fjord in northwest Iceland on the eastern edge of the Westfjords . It is a southern branch of the Húnaflói Bay .

The fjord is only 6–7 km wide and extends 36 km into the country, making it one of the longest fjords in Iceland. It has an average depth of 40 m. Several islands and skerries lie in this fjord.
Settlement
The first settler, Ingimundur, named the fjord after rams (isl. Hrútar ) he saw here. An island in the fjord also bears this name: the ram island of Hrútey . The river Hrútafjarðará ("Widderfjord river") flows into the southern end of the fjord . The area around the fjord belongs to the municipality of Húnaþing vestra .
Transport links
The national road 1, the Hringvegur , which runs around Iceland , runs along the southeastern part of the Hrútafjörður, the Innstrandavegur, road 68, which branches off from it, on its western bank.
