The Arnarvatnsheiði is a plateau in the west of Iceland .

geography

The plain lies on the municipal areas of Borgarbyggð and Húnaþing vestra northeast of Reykholtsdalur and north of Húsafell . To the east is the Langjökull glacier .

The area is best known for the many lakes where you can fish trout in summer . There are three things in the Icelandic landscape that are considered innumerable: the lakes of Arnarvatnsheiði, the islands in Breiðafjörður and the mounds of earth in Vatnsdalur .

The climate here, as elsewhere in the Icelandic highlands, is quite harsh.

In the southwest of the Arnarvatnsheiði there are caves in the Hallmundarhraun lava field , which dates back to the 9th century . B. Surtshellir and the Víðgelmir cave. In the caves there is a chaotic jumble of broken lava rocks, stones and rocks. Access can sometimes be dangerous due to icing. In ancient times, these caves were often home to outlaws who had been expelled from Icelandic society for crimes.
