The Akureyri Airport ( IATA code : AEY , ICAO code : BIAR ) is an international airport in Akureyri in northern Iceland .
history
The airport's beginnings go back to the 1930s when seaplanes first landed on the nearby Eyjafjörður fjord . A small airfield in Melgerdismelar was then used. From 1937 there was a regular flight connection between Reykjavík and Akureyri. In 1955, the airfield was equipped with a gravel runway. This was paved in 1967.
Today the airport, which is three kilometers from Akureyri city center, has a larger airport building with a tower.
During the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010, Akureyri temporarily served as an alternate airport for the international airport in Keflavík .
