The Egilsstaðir Airport ( Icelandic: Egilsstaðaflugvöllur ) is an international airport in Egilsstaðir in northeast Iceland .
The airport was originally opened in 1968 and has been expanded several times since then. The last major renovation, which corresponds to the current state of development, was completed on September 23, 1993.
Air Iceland offers flight connections to Akureyri and Reykjavík in Iceland. From summer 2007 to 2012 there was an international scheduled connection to Copenhagen , this was offered by Iceland Express . The airport experienced a boom with the construction of the Kárahnjúkar power plant , and there was another flight connection to Copenhagen by the Lithuanian airline Aurela Air . From May 2016 Discover the World will be offering seasonal flights to London - Gatwick .
Egilsstaðir Airport is (next to Akureyri ) the alternative airport for Keflavík Airport .
