Isavia ohf. is the national Icelandic air traffic control and airport operator . It is subordinate to the Icelandic authority Flugmálastjórn Íslands ( English Icelandic Civil Avitation Administration , German Zivile Icelandic Aviation Authority ). Isavia is legally set up in the form of the Icelandic Opinbert hlutafélag (ohf.) ( Icelandic for "public company", also: corporation under public law).
history
Icelandic air traffic control was established in 1945. It was operated in cooperation with the US Air Force until 1953, after which it returned to Icelandic hands. It was not until 2006 that airport operations and classic air traffic control tasks were separated from one another.
Civil aviation should be exempted from state control, so that the Icelandic parliament decided in December 2009 to staff air traffic control with civilian employees; this meant the withdrawal of the Icelandic military from ISAVIA.
On May 1, 2010, ISAVIA was transferred from the state-owned company to a public company (Opinbert hlutafélag). The company has operated all Icelandic airports since then.
