The Dutch air traffic control ( Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland , abbreviation LVNL ) is the body that deals with air traffic control in Dutch airspace and Dutch civil aviation .

history

The LVNL emerged from the Air Traffic Safety Department ( Luchtverkeersbeveiliging , LVB) of the Dutch National Aviation Service ( Rijksluchtvaartdienst , RLD).

This was decoupled from the RLD on January 1, 1993 and became an independent non-governmental organization . On September 22nd, 1998 , at the same time as the first official opening of the new service building at Schiphol-Ost Airport , the name LVB to LVNL and the new logo were introduced.

The Reich Aviation Service itself emerged from the Aviation Service established in 1930 . This service was established after the Dutch Aviation Act came into force in 1927 .

Until then, the traffic control was carried out by the military radio station of the aviation department at the Soesterberg air base , later by the Rotterdam Waalhaven airport . Radar did not yet exist at the time; radio was the most important and almost only instrument for air traffic controllers .

Control centers

In addition to the headquarters at Schiphol-Ost , the LVNL has branch offices at the airports where they perform flight control tasks. Since 2006 these have been Rotterdam Airport , Groningen Airport Eelde , and Maastricht Aachen Airport . In the future, LVNL will also be responsible for air surveillance at Lelystad Airport .

Following the announcement by the Ministry of Defense that Twente Airport will be closed, the province of Overijssel and the municipality of Enschede are working on the breakthrough of Enschede's civil airport .

By 2007 the LVNL will take over all tasks of the military air traffic controller in order to control civil air traffic.

Side tasks

In addition to handling all air traffic in Dutch airspace, the LVNL also has other tasks that are regulated in the Dutch Aviation Act. This includes the renewal and maintenance of the technical system, the distribution of aviation information, the training of air traffic controllers and the creation of aeronautical charts.

The international name of the LVNL is Air Traffic Control the Netherlands .

LVNL is a member of the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization .
