Norlandair is an Icelandic airline based in Akureyri and based at Akureyri Airport .
history
Norlandair was founded on June 1st, 2008. The Twin Otter flight operations were taken over by Air Island . However, the company can trace its roots back to a company of the same name founded in 1974. This company was founded by a few aviation professionals who acquired the Akureyri-based carrier North Air. In 1975 Icelandair bought a stake in the company, and Norlandair used it to buy a Twin Otter that was used for scheduled and charter flights. Since then, Norlandair has also offered scheduled and charter flights on the east coast of Greenland.
In 1997, Norlandair and Icelandair's domestic operations merged and the name was changed to Air Island. The charter flight department was in Akureyri and so was the maintenance department for the Twin Otter. In 2008 Air Island decided to sell the Twin Otter and maintenance division in Akureyri. Following this decision, on June 3, 2008, some former Air Island employees and investors decided to buy Air Island's businesses. It was decided to use the well-known name Norlandair, as the company was called before the merger with Icelandair.
Air Greenland has a 25% stake in Norlandair.
