Reyðarfjörður

The municipality of Fjarðabyggð [ ˈfjarðap Gemeindeð ] is an Icelandic municipality in the Austurland region of East Iceland. On January 1, 2019, it had 5070 inhabitants.

Emergence

Fjarðabyggð was formed on June 7, 1998 from the following three municipalities: the town of Neskaupstaður with the rural municipality of Norðfjörður ( Norðfjarðarhreppur ) incorporated in 1994 ; the town of Eskifjörður (isl. Eskifjarðarkaupstaður ) with the rural community of Helgustaðir ( Helgustaðahreppur ), which was incorporated in 1988, and the rural community of Reyðarfjörður (isl. Reyðarfjarðarhreppur ).

On June 9, 2006, three more municipalities joined: the municipality of Austurbyggð with 859 inhabitants (2005), in turn formed on October 1, 2003 through the merger of the previous rural communities Búðir ( Búðahreppur ) and Stöðvarfjörður ( Stöðvarhreppur ); the rural community Fáskrúðsfjörður (Isl. Fáskrúðsfjarðarhreppur ) with 48 inhabitants (2005) (not to be confused with the village of the same name, which now belongs to the same municipality) and the rural community Mjóifjörður (Isl. Mjóafjarðarhreppur (2005) with 42 inhabitants.

places

The largest settlements in the municipality are Reyðarfjörður (1,102 inhabitants), Neskaupstaður (1,437 inhabitants) and Eskifjörður (1,043 inhabitants), while smaller settlements are Fáskrúðsfjörður (662 inhabitants) and Stöðvarfjörður (203 inhabitants, all as of January 1, 2011).

The place Fáskrúðsfjörður [ ˈfauskruðsˌfjœrðʏr ] (formerly Búðir) is a village on the fjord of the same name . You live from fishing. From 2003 to 2006 the place belonged to the municipality Austurbyggð .

The French fishermen

Fáskrúðsfjörður was a center for French fishermen who came fishing in the winter season between 1880 and 1920, mainly from Brittany and the areas on the border with Belgium (see also the novel Pêcheur d'Islande by Pierre Loti ). However, only a few of them settled in the village, most of them worked as fishermen out at sea and were very exploited in the process. They only came to barter deals on land or when they were sick or injured, which is why a small hospital, the Franski spítalinn , was set up for them there, the remains of which stood on the bank opposite the village. In the meantime the corrugated iron house has been brought back to the village and renovated. The French Museum and the generally bilingual street names (Icelandic, French) bear witness to this time. There is also the Franskir dagar ( French days ) festival in town every summer .

tunnel

The place benefited from the improved transport links to the Reyðarfjörður through the opening of the Fáskrúðsfjarðargöng tunnel in 2005.

Stöðvarfjörður [ ˈstœðvarˌfjœrðʏr ] is a small place on the fjord of the same name. From 2003 to 2006 the place belonged to the municipality Austurbyggð.

The large private collection of Petra Sveinsdóttir mainly shows many different crystals for which the area is famous. The Ice Age glacier, which was in the country in the cold ages until 10,000 years ago, rested particularly hard on the east fjords , because the largest glaciers were also located here at today's Vatnajökull during the Ice Age . Therefore, around 2000 m were eroded by glacier abrasion. Here you can see particularly well into the interior of large old central volcanoes and find a wide variety of volcanic rock types (see also Berufjörður ). Also at Reyðarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður and Stöðvarfjörður are the remains of such volcanoes, which are up to 12 million years old.

Population development

During the construction of the aluminum smelter at Reyðarfjörður, the community almost experienced a population growth explosion due to the large number of foreign guest workers. In the meantime, the population has stabilized again at a lower value.
